Introduction

Hi there, welcome to Aeos Records.

‘Aeos’ stands for ‘Acoustic, Electronic, Organic, Supersonic’. Aeos Records showcases the recorded work of Berlin-based, Canadian-born pianist, composer and multi-instrumentalist tobias tinker (that’s me!)…

Those four words encapsulate the focus of my musical work over the past 15 years or so (well, the fourth one is mainly just for fun, but still). I work in both purely acoustic and purely electronic genres, but am perhaps happiest and most at home in the spaces where these two worlds collide, as it were. And I tend to gravitate strongly towards ‘organic’ compositional techniques involving improvisation.

The albums below are divided into a number of sections, to give a bit of structure to what is otherwise a pretty eclectic mix of styles, influences, genres, and so on. Enjoy the music and feel free to explore the site – including the links to related projects at the bottom of this page…

Broken Saints Soundtrack

Broken Saints began as an experimental online serial graphic novel in 2000, created on a shoestring budget in a basement in North Vancouver by Brooke Burgess, Ian Kirby and Andrew West. It’s a dark, complex story that follows the adventures of “four strangers from the quiet corners of the globe”… and the music I (and contributing composer Quentin Grey) provided is rather varied – sometimes apocalyptic and intense, sometimes brooding and atmospheric, sometimes haunting and emotional. And just about everything in between! The following albums are part of the Broken Saints soundtrack series:

Continuum solo piano series

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, in 1999 I inaugurated the ‘continuum’ concert series. These solo concerts are fully improvised, long format live performances drawing on jazz, classical and New Age influences.

As much as possible without being precious about it, I try to approach the piano with nothing pre-conceived at all in terms of what I am going to play. The results are invariably surprising to me, both musically – I frequently have no idea how I am actually able to play what comes out – and in terms of their intensity and emotional directness.

The results of this have been captured on a number of albums:

Sound Fascination

Sound Fascination is “a journal of musical explorations, improvisations and other adventures”. I have always been fascinated with sound; much of my journey as a musician and composer has been driven in part  by a love of and search for novel textures, ambiences, and soundscapes, and this has been a part of much of the music I’ve made. The Sound Fascination series brings this quest into the foreground…
